Report for Tuesday, February 8th, 2005

After visiting Doctor Terrence Joseph for a check up because one can never be too careful, I once more headed into the wetlands. With the sun finally making a reappearance today after many days of  playing hide and seek with frustrated villagers, the place had quickly started to dry off, all of the villages up to Mon Repos are now pretty much without the floodwater that has caused so much discomfort for the last three weeks. I was just about to think that maybe more areas had dried out but as I drove into Mon Repos the flooded out houses started showing up once more. The floodwater has dropped off about 13 inches but there are still lots of bottom houses in this area that are still flooded as we passed through today. Scenes of flooded out houses continued all the way to Enmore where I wrapped up my trip for today. There is more flooding of villages further up the road.

The place was unusually quiet today, for some reason there was not a lot of persons on the roadway as has been the case for the last three weeks. I wanted to go into Enterprise to see the extent of the flooding that is still bothering residents there but no one was at the head of the flooded out village entrance when I passed. Even with the serious scare of Leptospirosis, I still saw persons walking in the floodwater in many of the villages that I passed through.

I paid a visit to Bachelors Adventure to see how they were making out and met up with Minister Sheik Baksh who was sharing out bottled water to the villagers. The Minister promised villagers that he was going to install a 400 gallon water tank in the village tomorrow and also one for the village of Bare Root, the Minister reassured residents that the water supply vehicles would visit them daily to ensure a constant supply.

I spoke to residents of Bare Root who told me that since my last visit and publication of their story on this website that they have been enjoying much attention by the authorities, I was told that they received hampers and water. A medical team from the Ministry of Health was leaving the area when I got there this afternoon. Bryan Mackintosh.
