Report for Thursday, February 10th, 2005

On Wednesday February 9th, I passed by the University of Guyana to see what condition the campus was in. The floodwater had receded and the University was drying off, students and staff members took full advantage of the hot sunshine that has blessed us for the last 3 days to get water soaked chairs and other items back to their previous state of dryness. We also passed by the South Cummings Lodge and Sophia squatting areas to see how the resident there were making out, every house that we passed had huge piles of water soaked items thrown out waiting for the sanitation trucks to pass by and pick them up, some residents simply decided to burn whatever they had decided to throw away.

My road trip today Thursday February 10th  took me all the way to Mahaica to investigate reports that the entire Mahaica area was under floodwaters. We got there at about 2.30 pm and found the area mostly dry except for a few yards which showed signs of earlier flooding, the sandbags that lined the Mahaica River/creek indicated that the area had experienced flooding the day before, I drove all the way into Cane Grove and was pleasantly surprised to see the area was quite dry, when I got there school children were making their way home after a tiring day of studies.

The fear of becoming infected with water borne diseases has grown considerably, the media reported that some 16 persons have died from what is believed to be Leptospirosis. Well known Calypsoian Joseph "Lil Joe" Thomas, a reporter attached to Kaieteur News is one one the better known victims of this terrible water borne disease Leptospirosis, there has been numerous reports of  persons  experiencing  Leptospirosis type symptoms. There is fear that there just might be other water borne diseases in the infected water that the authorities are not yet aware of. Samples from the persons who have already died are being sent overseas for investigation, the authorities are still awaiting the medical reports of the samples to return. The question to ask is who is going to take responsibility for these deaths, will the members of the drainage and irrigation board accept the blame?
