Report for Friday, February 4th, 2005

The newspapers today said that the flood water should be gone in two weeks time providing that the rain eases up, two more weeks of pure agony for tired and frustrated residents of the East Coast. Two more weeks of dwelling in the dirty polluted floodwater that now has become life threatening over the last week. With some six persons dying from what is believed to be deadly water borne disease Leptospirosis. The reality of death only sinks when it surrounds your every move, just where Leptospirosis is lurking to claim its next victim is anyone's guess. I saw kids walking on the road in Success South without any shoes on, these are the same road that were flooded just a few days ago and they could possibly be breeding grounds for scores of other water borne diseases that simply love the exact conditions that exist all along the East Coast. Guyana is in a serious crisis and residents must know of the danger that lies in every pool of water that they walk through. There are drugs that should be taken to ward off possible infections and these drugs must be made available to each and every resident of the flooded out areas in  order to protect them from certain death.

I traveled up the East Coast once more today and saw dead dogs and piles of rubbish all over the place. Even though the state radio has been announcing all week that a massive cleanup operation  is planned to rid the flooded villages of the tons of garage floating around, I am yet to see any serious attempt being made to do so even as we compete three weeks of this devastating flood.
